TeleLIFE meets Rimjhim Bhagchandani, Wedding Planner Extraordinaire and checks out her indispensable planning secrets.

HOW DID WEDDING PLANNING HAPPEN?
Till 2008 I was primarily focused on corporate launches, concerts & private parties. In December 2008, a client for whom I had organized corporate events asked me to handle his wedding. Whilst it was a great challenge and a phenomenal responsibility since I had never done something as personal as a wedding before, my client’s faith in me inspired me to take it on.

After extensive research and hard work, I was able to pull off the four functions and the client was delighted with the end result. From then on there was no looking back! Through each wedding I evolved and began to understand the nuances of what a wedding means to a family. I also discovered that I have a creative side and a passion for décor.

The last five years have been incredible and have taken me to Miami, Hua Hin, Phuket, Cebu, Amritsar & Pune to organize destination weddings for my clients. In addition, I handle about 12 weddings a year in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the other neighbouring emirates.
I consider myself really fortunate to have worked with some of the most wonderful families and be a part of their memorable moments.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR JOB?
Weddings are extremely special & happy occasions. I love the fact that I am an intrinsic part of such an important and memorable event of a couple’s life.

ANY MEMORABLE STORY TO TELL
Every wedding has something special & memorable. It could be as simple a thing as the blooming romance between the couple or a funny incident with the friends. The memories are so many, it’s difficult to list them down as it’s all spontaneous and for the moment.

WHAT ARE THE CURRENT TRENDS IN WEDDING DÉCOR?
Metallic with sequins and rose gold themes are very popular as they add instant glamour to an event. Shimmering linen, napkin holders, chunky head pieces and feathers are also very popular these days. The look is contemporary & stylish.
The previously popular pinks & lace are being replaced with more dramatic combinations of navy & orange, plum & grey and other unique colour combinations.
Another trend becoming popular is that brides and grooms are doing away with celebrity performers and opting for more dramatic theatrical performers. There is also a lot of focus on lighting. For an upcoming wedding, the bride has planned dream catcher gobos for her youngsters’ night.

The traditional stage set up where a couple stood for hours taking pictures with guests is now being replaced by Presidential Tables & the couple stepping down to meet family & friends. It’s now about innovative 5 tier cakes, champagne towers & dramatic entries.
Instagram has become a huge influencer. Most couples use wedding hashtags these days and desire an instagrammable wedding!

HOW DO YOU ENSURE THAT A BRIDE AND GROOM’S PERSONALITY IS REFLECTED IN THE WEDDING DECOR?
The bride and grooms’ personalities should be reflected not only in the décor but in all elements of the wedding as it is their special event. These days most couples are very aware and know exactly what they want. I work very closely with my clients to understand their vision and dreams; and my role is to make their dreams a reality ensuring that it is not just any other event.

I remember a few years ago a client wished to have a fairy come down from the sky and deliver the ring for the engagement ceremony; we made that happen through a heliosphere aerial act. I love to experiment with innovative and fresh concepts to provide my clients with something WOW! I make sure there is at least one signature element in each event which guests talk about even after the wedding is over. It could be a simple thing as a dry ice effect during the first dance or snowflakes falling during the cake cutting ceremony.

TIPS FOR COUPLES TO USE A WEDDING PLANNER EFFECTIVELY…
My main advice is that you should work with a wedding planner that you trust, one who has strong listening skills, has an excellent rapport with the vendors and is passionate about the work. While weddings are a memorable event, they can also be stressful. The wedding planner’s role is to eliminate that stress so you can enjoy your special time.

In addition:
• be clear about your vision and wants
• be open about your budgets so the planner can advise accordingly work intelligently around it.
• be open to considering new trends
• if in doubt, don’t hesitate to ask (beyond the regular wedding planner consultation, my team and I have connected brides with couture designers, card companies, coordinated travel schedules, sourced personalized favours, etc.).

Sneha Adnani and Amrit Bhagnari – Cebu, Philippines

Amrit and Sneha live in Dubai. They met at a nightclub for the first time and after chatting for a few minutes they figured a common connection. They chose Cebu, Philippines as their wedding destination.

Wedding Venue
It isn’t easy choosing an overseas location for a Destination Wedding which can meet all your and your family’s needs, and at the same time be convenient for all guests. After looking at various hotels in Thailand, Malaysia and India, we finally chose to host our wedding at Shangri-La Mactan Resort & Spa, Cebu, Philippines. The destination was new for both of us, and for most of our guests too. Shangri-la Mactan Resort & Spa blew us away! It is surrounded by clear water, has a number of beautiful locations to host different functions at, the staff are friendly and helpful, and the rooms have a stunning beach view.

Wedding Planning
Since this was one of the biggest Indian weddings taking place in Cebu, planning was not very easy. From food, decor, lighting, music, to every little detail, Amrit and I were involved in all communication and planning and we took the help of Philippines-based Wedding Planner Stanz Catalan for execution. Stanz is a Filipino but she did a fine job of managing our Indian wedding, and she executed everything as per our imagination and plans. She also helped us get the best of suppliers in Cebu, and worked closely with the Shangri-La team who were extremely co-operative, so overall we were comfortable closer to the wedding day

We also hired the services of Dubai-based Rimjhim Bhagchandani as our Wedding Consultant as she knows our families, with her added help, the Planner and Hotel ensured everything went off the way we wanted it to be.

Wedding Events
The wedding festivities took place over 3 days. We had 8 functions, and each one of them had a different theme, and were held at different locations within the property.

15th February, Welcome Dinner, Cowrie Cove- As this was the first event and a new destination for most guests, the Welcome dinner gave a feel of the Filipino culture. We used royal blue and white as the main colors for the decor, that was embellished with local elements such as capiz shells. The other highlight of the evening was a performance by Shobna Chandramohan, the popular wedding singer from Dubai.

16th February night, Engagement- The theme was ‘Winter Wonderland’, so we chose colors like white and silver for decor. The entire ballroom was draped in white cloth, and we used winter trees and snowflakes to reflect the theme. Our main entertainer for the night was a Violinist from the Philippines named Juleus. We entered alongside him, and he continued playing some amazing commercial tracks.

16th February night, Youngsters party and Ghazal night, Cowrie Cove and Ocean Pavilion– After the Engagement, we had a Youngsters and Ghazal party planned at two different venues. For the Youngsters, we chose ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ as the theme, because the venue was a deck surrounded by the ocean. Our entry for this event was on a speedboat, which I should say, stunned most guests! The decor elements included ship sails, skeleton scarves and pirate patches as props. We had DJ Manoj from Dubai and local Filipino dancers for this night, who performed to different Bollywood tracks. We also setup a photo-booth so guests could get some fun pictures on the spot.

The Ghazal night was of course a quieter event. Themed ‘Jashn-E-Bahaar’, a singer from Jakarta alongwith Shobna Chandramohan, kept the guests entertained with old Bollywood hits.

17th February afternoon, Pool Party– The Spanish inspiration theme ‘Sangria under the Sun’ was the most fun event of our wedding. We used colors like red, orange and yellow to create the Spanish feel, and me and Amrit entered the venue with Spanish flamingos. Sangria and other cocktails were served by Bombay Bartenders ‘Flaming Trio’, and it turned out to be a fun-filled, activity-packed event with barbecues, relaxing massages and DJ Manoj playing some great upbeat tracks.

17th February night, Sangeet, The Marquee– Our Sangeet later in the evening was themed ‘Turkish- Ottoman Empire’. For the decor we used colors such as blue and green, with a touch of gold. The event featured performances from our family and friends, LED Dhol players and DJ Manoj spinning music till the wee hours of the morning.

18th February afternoon, Wedding Ceremony– As Amrit and I always wanted a beach wedding, we had our Mandap set up by the beach. It was quite large and accommodated around 20 people. We entered alongside our cousin brothers holding a flowerbed above us. We chose colors such as pink, red and gold for the decor, to reflect the classic colors of the ceremony.

18th February night, Wedding Reception, Mactan Ballroom– The Theme was ‘The Grand Ball’, and the ballroom was decorated with crystals and bling, and designed in colors of lavender and white. We felt like ‘VVIPs’ as we entered the grand function accompanied by 20 Philippine Military cadets blowing trumpets and performing a march. Wedding speeches by family and friends, cake cutting, photo and video highlights cherishing the 3-day wedding were the highlights of this Grand Finale event.

Dubai-based billionaire Ramesh Ramani’s son Nisarg, got engaged to Nupur Sakaria, and the wow affair was managed by Dubai’s ace Wedding Planner Rimjhim Bhagchandani of Rimjhim Events

The 300 guests who came from Dubai, Bangalore and Mumbai were mesmerized by the grandeur of an engagement ceremony. One of the guests quipped: “I’ve attended several big fat weddings, but never have I seen such a spectacular engagement ceremony. Every function was wow, but what made the celebration spectacular was the energy with which the Ramani family celebrated, and the efforts they took to ensure each and every guest had a great time. Not to forget the highly enthusiastic groom Nisarg who was personally involved in planning everything over so many months”!

Neha and Ravi’s glitzy engagement at the Armani Hotel in Burj Khalifa was a testiment to their impeccable taste in picking the location and making friends, family and guests experience the glamour of Armani Hotel and the groove of Hari & Sukhmani. I met Neha and Ravi a couple of weeks before their engagement while I was in Dubai shooting Karishma and Satpreet’s wedding at the Medinat Jumeirah. I could feel an instant connection to Neha and Ravi and we had a creative connection right away. Their outfits from Shantanu & Nikhil were stunning and that had me all dreamy of the images that we would get from the event. Unfortunately. I could not make it back to Dubai for the shoot. Sid and Aziz traveled to Dubai for a couple of days to shoot the event and they had an amazing time with Neha and Ravi’s family, friends and guests. A rather chilly january evening outdoor event had a rather balmy dance floor with friends, family and guests tapping to the peppy tunes Hari and Sukhmani performed. I cant thank Rimjhim aunty ( Rimjhim Events ) enough for putting together a fabulous setting for the event with a drop down cake at the altar. The minimalist decor complemented the rich backdrop of downtown Dubai. Her attention to details is extremely inspiring – the day started out pleasant but as the evening progressed, the temperature dropped rather suddenly and Rimjhim aunty had pashmina shawls, neatly folded in a basket, for guests who were not able to dance the chil away. As the evening progressed, guests could not help but get swayed, into the dance floor, by the peppy tunes Hari and Sukhmani performed.

Sid and I are looking forward to the wedding in Phuket later this year. It should be 4 days of non stop fun and action. Already gearing up for the epic pool party before the reception!

Many go for it but many in Dubai say the Feng Shui just isn’t right for a 12/12/12 marital bliss

A memorable day at the Dolphin Bay, followed by a candlelit dinner at Nobu and a walk under the stars for a romantic, once in a lifetime wedding proposal is all that’s on the cards for Karan, who’s planning to pop the question to his long-time girlfriend on 12/12/12. Calling it a “magical” day, he says: “I chose the date specifically as a memorable one that we can claim as our own some day down the road. It is the last day of the century that such a combination of date, month and year will unite. “Why not turn it into a day for our unity?” World over, many are looking upon 12/12/12 as a day of special meaning, calling it ‘auspicious’ or ‘unique’ for marriage or to give birth, while others are looking upon it as the start of a doomsday scenario as per the ancient Mayan calendar prediction that the world will end by December 21, 2012. “If the world is to end in a few weeks, then I would much rather face it standing by the woman I love,” quips Karan. Dubai hotels such as The Address Marina and The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort and Marina claim to have been booked out months in advance. Said Mona Asprah from The Westin events department: “We are hosting an approximate 300-people wedding on 12/12/12 at our outdoors amphitheater. “In fact, enquiries and bookings for the date came a year in advance; however, it had to be book three times over because for some reason it didn’t work out for the first few couples.” The superstitious may call it the curse of the date, however Asprah said that there are always people ready to book such dates, despite Feng Shui stating otherwise. “But in my experience, 11/11/11 was a far better date in terms of inquiries and considered more auspicious,” she said. Other popular Dubai wedding venues such as the Jumeirah properties, which include Madinat Jumeirah, are also not available, having being booked out for the ongoing Dubai International Film Festival. Meanwhile, Dubai-based wedding planner Rimjhim Bhagchandani couldn’t hide her surprise that the date is demanding a premium from some properties in the emirate. “I am quite surprised that several Indian, Hindu, families have approached me to plan a wedding for them on 12/12/12,” she says. “However, I was forced to decline because I have a big one on the cards for later in December and couldn’t take on two weddings so close to one another.” Bhagchandani, however, adds that weddings on such ‘unique’ dates are a fad that won’t die down in a hurry. “I think it’s more of a fashion statement than anything else, to block such a premium date when astrologically the stars are not even aligned,” she says. “Most of the traditional Indians don’t want to take on such a date, which is immediately followed by a no-moon day. However, other religions are no bound by such restrictions.” According to media reports, even places such as Hong Kong and Singapore that are always in on the numbers game for mass weddings have shied away from this particular date, with many stating the Feng Shui is not right for marital bliss. On the other hand, engaged couple, Kavita and Pradeep Nair, said they did not even consider the date because some properties were charging a premium to block the wedding venue on the day. “I was told by one of the hotels that I may have to pay Dh70,000 to block the place itself,” said Kavita. “That is silly to begin with, especially since I am not date conscious.” Dubai-based brand manager Kanwalpreet Kaur also does not understand what the fuss is all about. “Why are such dates important? Frankly, the appeal of 10/10/10, 11/11/11 or now 12/12/12 have never been understood by me,” she said. “Love has no date and shouldn’t be defined by it. “So if you are planning to get married, why not do so when your heart says it’s right?”

Meanwhile, opinion is still divided on the medical front, whether 12/12/12 should be looked upon as a premium date to schedule a baby’s birth, as has been the case this year in some hospitals.

“We have an increased number of appointments for a C-section procedure tomorrow,” confirmed Leon Du Preez, Medical Director of Medi Clinic, The City Hospital, Dubai.

“We accept as many requests as we can cope with. But we would not hire extra staff. We do what we can deal with.”

At the moment of writing this story, it was still possible to make an appointment for 12/12/12.

“As long as the mother is close enough to term, which would mean she is pregnant 38 weeks or more, she can make an appointment for a C-section at our hospital.”

However, there were also hospitals clearly refusing the requests.

“We have heard that such practice is going on but we do not accept any such requests,” said Suresh Kumar Menon, Medical Director at International Modern Hospital, Dubai. “Unless there is a case of emergency and the foetus needs to be removed, we do not schedule a C-section procedure.”

Meanwhile, Qassimi Hospital, Sharjah also did not report any unusual number of appointments for a C-section scheduled for 12/12/12.

“We have not received any such requests and as a government hospital we would not accept them. We could not deal with an overload of on one day. Our capacity is to deal with four to eight procedures per day,” said Khalid Khalfan, Medical Director of the hospital.

Wedding photographer extraordinaire Milli Ghosh shares the beautifully captured memories of the last wedding of the season she photographed in Dubai.

Karishma and Satpreet’s wedding in Dubai was a blast before we wrapped up the last wedding season. The events were planned by my favorite wedding planner Rimjhim Bhagchandani and coordinated to perfection with every little detail thought of and executed. I started discussing the shoot plan with Karishma months before the wedding and we carved out time for a sunset shoot in the dunes- something that puts all the events and festivities in perspective.

The festivities started with a very intimate yet vibrant Mehndi at Karishma’s villa where close friends and family mingled and danced into the wee hours. The second event was the masquerade theme Sangeet at the Majlis Al Mina in Mina A’Salam hotel. A huge masquerade backdrop with ethnic decor set the stage for performances by friends and family followed by a dance floor oozing energy and fun. Again, Rimjhim aunty perfected the ambiance.

The Wedding started off with Satpreet’s baraat at Al Qasr at Madinat Jumeirah with Karishma arriving in an abra (traditional Arabic boat) from her room to the mandap. Perfect co-ordination of Karishma’s outfit with the decor, which had a mix of white and mustard. 1000 balloons were released as Karishma got off the abra. A beautiful twilight wedding ceremony followed Karishma’s arrival.

The Reception was held the day after at the grand Johara ballroom and had a Gatsby theme. Vintage typewriter for guests to type in their wishes to the newly weds, a huge Gatsby backdrop for the photo-booth, and a stage elegantly displaying Karishma and Satpreet’s wedding logo. DJ Sash kept the guests dancing to some groovy numbers and remix songs.

After four days of hectic fun, I am not sure how Karishma and Satpreet found the energy to meet us at the Bab Al Sham’s resort for a twilight photo-shoot in the dunes. The resort lent a very oasis-like feel and it was fun shooting in the narrow alleys and sunlit terraces. I could not wait to shoot Karishma’s reception outfit against the neutral colors of the sand dunes. The lighting was perfect, and we clicked away as the sun set in the distant horizon.

DUBAI // Couples looking to tie the knot in the wedding of their dreams are descending on a local hotel to take in luxury Indian crafts, jewellery and products.

The two-day Big Fat Indian Wedding Expo at the JW Marriott in Deira that started yesterday showcases to UAE brides and grooms-to-be what they could have on their big day if money is no object, of course.

With a wedding industry in the UAE valued at US$700 million (Dh2.57 billion), it is no wonder wedding planners, costume designers, jewellery designers, event managers, make-up artist, planners, decorators and honeymoon destination travel agents were all on-hand to show their wares.

“Indian and Pakistani families in the UAE want fairy-tale weddings for their children and, hence, money is not a factor,” said wedding planner Rimjhim Bhagchandani.

The Indian said that in one of the weddings she planned Dh18 million was spent just on decor.

“When it comes to high-profile wedding budgets, the sky is the limit,” she said.

And Ms Bhagchandani has witnessed a growing trend for couples wanting to get married in Dubai, but also in Abu Dhabi locations such as Saadiyat Island and Yas Island.

“You are spoilt for choice when it comes to locations,” she said. “Some of the world’s most opulent hotels call Dubai their home.

“The varied landscape allows you to do one function at a desert resort in the middle of magnanimous sand dunes, while the next event can be held on a cruise ship motoring through the beautiful creek and ending with a picturesque function on the soft sands of a beach.”

One trend she is seeing less of though, is appearances by Bollywood and Hollywood personalities at nuptials. Instead, people want to spend money on improving food and hospitality, rather than spending millions on stars appearing for just a few minutes.

“People are realising that weddings are a personal function, that should not be hijacked by stars,” she said. “For that special day, bride and the groom are the stars.”

Ms Bhagchandani recalls one wedding in Dubai some years ago when Shah Rukh Khan, along with other Bollywood stars, made a guest appearance at the wedding of a Pakistani businessman’s daughter.

“The whole attention was captured by the Bollywood stars and everyone literally forgot about the bride and groom. It was such a disaster,” she said.

Anupama Verma, a dress designer from Mumbai, said that her clientele in Dubai were not only Indians but Emirati as well.

“Ladies from the Al Maktoum family are our regular clients along with other Emirati customers,” said the designer whose dresses start at Dh20,000 rising to millions of dirhams, depending on the work and cut requirements.

According to Ms Verma, Emirati women make for very most stylish brides and many prefer Indian designers because of the bright colours they offer and the traditional style of their work. “Emirati brides are the most fashionable bride, who are ready to pay the desired price of their favourite dresses.”

One bride-to-be in attendance was Rohina, a 25-year-old auditor in Dubai who is getting married in a few months. She said such exhibitions give brides the chance to see a variety of options under one roof.

“Why should I go to India for wedding arrangements if I can get the same options, maybe even better ones, for the same price here?” she asked.

Ms Bhagchandani said the cosmopolitan nature of the UAE and the availability of all types of cuisines also made the country attractive for those tying the knot.

And the thrill of seeing a couple’s big day go off without a hitch has kept her busy planning weddings for five years now after previously working in events management.

“I came into wedding planning accidentally when one of my corporate clients asked me to arrange a family wedding. And I loved it,” said the woman who has organised the weddings of many high-profile Indians and Pakistanis in the UAE.

With the political unrest in Thailand, is it safe to plan a destination wedding there? Wedding Planners share their opinion.

Armed soldiers with automatic weapons in the streets, nationwide curfews installed and news broadcasts censored; these are some of the updates we are reading in the papers, so naturally everyone is wondering if Thailand, or more specifically Bangkok will be affected when it comes to tourists’ traffic. While tourism is the mainstay of Thailand, WeddingSutra readers will know that Thailand is synonymous with Destination Weddings too. In the last few weeks, we’ve heard some discussions around weddings there and if and how they are likely to be affected; while travel experts state it will be business as usual, we spoke to five Wedding Planners to know their perspective.

My company started planning weddings in Thailand with my own daughter’s wedding in Hua Hin in 2010 after which I have managed ten weddings all over Thailand. It is a preferred venue for destination weddings as the locations are stunning and the hospitality is unmatched. Many of my potential clients are expressing concern about Thailand, and I can understand their perspective, after all safety of their family and friends are paramount. That being said, I have been visiting Thailand for the last 20 years, and my experience has always been positive. I was stranded during the 2008 turmoil in Bangkok and within two days I was put on a flight back home. After all, the Thai Government works hard to ensure tourists’ safety. I am currently busy planning two weddings taking place in Thailand later this year, I really believe marriage is an extremely auspicious time in one’s life and the heavens watch over you. Of course, be prudent in your choice of venue and avoid any areas of unrest. Luckily, there are many stunning locations in Thailand which are not affected by the disturbances.

Our company is a complete wedding management company specialising in Thailand, and the last weddings we managed were at Shangri-La- Chiang Mai, Angsana Laguna Phuket and Siam Kempinski- Bangkok. The next wedding is in Khao Lak in August 2014. Our simple advice to clients is to stay off the areas close to the government offices in Bangkok city, and we reassure them that there is no need to worry. We have seen similar situations in the past; but the country’s citizens are calm and considerate towards others especially foreign visitors. So if you’re planning a celebration there, remember everything is normal and make the most of the situational discounts and schemes which various resorts are offering.

Having planned weddings at multiple destinations across the world, we still get the most requests for weddings in Thailand. The Thai hospitality, beautiful beaches, great hotel options, understanding of Indian weddings etc. are some of the many reasons why Thailand is the most popular location for destination weddings and will continue to be so. We have just returned from a trip to Phuket and Bangkok with our clients who are planning a wedding in December 2014. Having been there at this time, I can definitely say that streets are peaceful and everyone is carrying on with their lives normally. I am sure there will be less ambiguity in the near future and I think there should be no reason for anyone to reconsider venue options.

Every client wants a smoothly coordinated and well managed affair to remember. So my advice for those who are getting married there, follow the Thai media and if required connect with the Tourism Authority of Thailand Offices in Mumbai and Delhi to clarify your doubts. If you can, plan all the events inside the hotel or resort itself, because most of them have fabulous indoor and outdoor venues, and choose locations like Koh Samui, Krabi that will be minimally affected due to the political unrest.

Shradha and Kunal’s wedding reception was decorated with lovely blue and green lighting accented with silver, adding tremendous appeal to the spacious venue. The bride and groom continued rocking designer wear that fit perfectly with the venue décor.

Memories in Motion took the bride and groom and totally transformed them into superstar Bollywood celebrities in their portraits. The pictures are so amazing that at first glance I would never be able to differentiate them from actual celebrities. My favorite portrait has to be of Shradha lying in her designer dress – STUNNING!

Celebrity appearances at weddings is a money spinning industry in itself for which actors charge more than the average person’s annual salary for a mere 30-minute show and tell.

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan allegedly charges Dh67,000 per minute, while arch rival Salman Khan is relatively cheaper at Dh22,350, but is reportedly more unpredictable with his mood swings.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7 on the condition of anonymity, a leading event organiser who is in the business of arranging such celebrity appearances said: “The recent reports on Shah Rukh Khan charging Rs8 crores [Dh5.36 million] to attend a wedding in Dubai this month is utter nonsense. It was probably a story planted by his camp.

“The actor is known to charge approximately Rs30m [Dh2.01m] for a half hour appearance at a function, be a business event or a wedding, of which one-third is the commission taken by his booking agent.”

Despite the cut, at Dh67,000 per minute for a half-hour appearance, the King Khan – as he is fondly known amongst his fans – is at the high end of the barometer when it comes to celebrity hirings.

The source continued: “Salman Khan and Hirthik Roshan charge approximately Rs10m [Dh670,178] for their appearances, but of the two, most event organisers prefer the latter star for his lack of tantrums and his genuine efforts in getting to know the couple before going on stage to greet the newlyweds.

“We’ve had incidences where celebrities have wished the wrong people due to their lack of interest in caring for anything but the cash they pocket.”

The source added that the celebrities always charge 100 per cent of their fees upfront, with demands including flights and accommodation for a 15-person entourage, an expensive car at their disposal and an extended hotel stay at the host’s expense.

The second tier of actors, such as Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol and Arjun Rampal, reportedly charge anywhere between Dh335,000 and Dh400,000, with the source adding: “While one-film wonders such as Siddarth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan could range between Dh33,500 and Dh67,000.”

In terms of actresses, the rate card is considerably lower for the conventional half hour appearance, with Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra being the top-billed stars at Dh500,000.

“Bipasha Basu follows next at Dh170,000, Kangana Ranaut at Dh75,000, Chitraganda Singh at Dh50,000 and a surprisingly popular Prachi Desai at Dh 33,500,” they added.

Meanwhile, singers such as Punjabi act Sukhbir and Sophie Choudhary are known to charge approximately Dh70,000 for a 90-performance.

When quizzed about the first family of Bollywood, the Bachchans, the source added that to their knowledge, no member of the legendary Amitabh’s family has yet signed on for a wedding appearance unless it is that of a family or friend.

Even as affluent members of society have turned these celebrity show and tell sessions into a multi-million industry, there are people such as Dubai-based wedding planner, Rimjhim Bhagchandani, who claim they aren’t big fans of such half-hour appearances at marriages.

She explained further, saying: “A wedding is the bride and groom’s big day; why would you want to steal their thunder by roping in a celebrity that will overshadow the happy couple on stage?”

She continued: “I have several high profile weddings planned for later this year and I have said this exact same thing to the families. The focus of a marriage event should be the happy couple. Bring in a celebrity and no one will even recall how the bride looked, how the food was.

“A wedding is the biggest day for the couple getting married and only they should remain the sole focus; that’s my firm belief.”
